10/07/2026 Claridge's Director of Wine Earns Britain's Top Sommelier Honour After Excelling in Blind Tasting, Service, and Hospitality Excellence

Emma Denney, Director of Wine at Claridge's, has been named UK Sommelier of the Year 2026, adding one of the hospitality industry's most prestigious individual honours to an already distinguished career. The title was awarded following the live final in London, where competitors were tested across blind tasting, theory, food and wine pairing, spirits knowledge, and practical restaurant service.

Denney emerged from a record-breaking field that reflected the growing strength of the UK's sommelier profession. This year's competition attracted 68 applications representing 56 hospitality businesses and 33 nationalities, with 39 competitors taking part in the live stages—the largest field in the competition's history. According to the organisers, the exceptionally high standard of competition demonstrates that "the future of British sommellerie has never looked stronger."

Originally from Auckland, New Zealand, Denney's journey into hospitality began in her early teens, working as a dishwasher before developing a passion for wine. After gaining experience in New Zealand's restaurant scene, she relocated to London in 2017 and steadily built her career through respected restaurants before joining Claridge's, where she now leads one of the UK's most celebrated luxury hotel wine programmes.

The UK Sommelier of the Year competition is regarded as the country's premier test of sommelier excellence. Beyond technical wine knowledge, finalists are challenged on every aspect of modern hospitality, from identifying wines and spirits under pressure to delivering flawless guest service and demonstrating commercial understanding in a live restaurant environment. It is a competition designed to identify professionals capable of performing at the very highest level of the on-trade.

Denney's victory also reflects the evolving role of the modern sommelier. Today's leading beverage professionals are responsible not only for wine service but also for wine buying, cellar management, supplier relationships, staff education, and creating profitable beverage programmes that enhance the overall guest experience. As Director of Wine at Claridge's, Denney oversees one of Britain's most respected wine lists while helping shape the standards of luxury hospitality.

Alongside her role at Claridge's, Denney is also recognised within the wider wine industry as a judge for the London Wine Competition, where wines are assessed from the perspective of buyers and hospitality professionals who understand what succeeds in today's commercial marketplace.

Dolly Chao completed the 2026 UK Sommelier of the Year podium in second place, and Wilem Powell in third. Denney also collected the awards for Best Service Task and Best Blind Tasting, underlining the consistency of her performance throughout the competition.

Her achievement marks another milestone for the UK hospitality industry and reinforces the importance of investing in wine education, technical excellence, and world-class service. As restaurants continue to place greater emphasis on delivering memorable guest experiences, the role of highly trained sommeliers has never been more important.
